Find your study space.
This at first seems like an easy task to do but then you begin pondering on where you should go. You could go the traditional way and choose your desk but if that worked for you, you wouldn’t have clicked on this post, would you? So, let’s start from the basics.
What is a study space? Simple, it is a place where one can easily slip into a flow state. It is a space that one finds comfortable yet not comfortable enough to fall asleep in. The main purpose of such a space is to allow one to achieve their work/study goals with no distractions, so forget about studying in bed. Nine times out of ten you will be asleep within half an hour of studying there. So what is the best choice for you if you cannot stand the idea of a work desk and a chair? If this is a question you had in mind, follow along to learn a
few tricks to figure out what space fits you best!
Do you work better in silence or do you prefer places with some background
noise?
If your pick is silence, try going to the libraries that have desks. Libraries are the
quietest and most accessible public spaces you can find. But what if public spaces
make me uncomfortable? Do not worry, your own home has a variety of spaces
convenient for your studies. If you have a sofa or a bean bag try using them to do
any reading tasks or the assignments that require you to use your computer. But
what about the writing assignments? Try using the floor. Yes, you are not mistaken,
the floor. Try sitting on a carpet. You can use some blankets and pillows to make the
space a little more comfortable.
If you are all right with some background noise, you have many more options. In
addition to the spaces that people who prefer solitude might enjoy you have your
own spaces that are waiting to be explored. Coffee shops are the most common go-
to for both people who prefer to study with others and for those who to be alone.
Another interesting place you can choose is a park. It is a quiet enough place to
allow you to concentrate but it also calms you down with the sounds of nature and d
some occasional passerby.
It may be a case that one may have a preference for being surrounded by different
noises whilst delegating their tasks; however, they are unable to go to those places,
and; thus, are forced to work from home. The causes might be different, one might
not be able to afford to go to a coffee shop every day to just study or they might not
be able to go out due to weather. That should not worry you; however, as there are
ways to turn your home into your favorite spot. Just organize an available space in a
way that would best simulate your preferred spot and switch on a playlist that
resembles the sounds of your preferred space.
For instance, if you like to study outside in parks, You might put a blanket over your carpet and switch on some forest/ park sounds. If you prefer coffee shops, you might switch your desk for a dining table and put on some café lo-fi beats. Such a method can be implemented for any space that you love working in.
These choices lead us to the next question. Do you prefer studying alone or
with others?
While many people tend to choose to study with others as explaining and asking
questions allows each one of them to deepen their knowledge and increase their
overall productivity, many simply prefer to study alone. It is common for people to
find the presence of other people in close proximity to them a distraction. If you are
the first type of person, then you can go practically anywhere you wish, but with the
consideration that you are not the only people that are there if you choose to stay in
a public space. One of the disadvantages of such studying is the sheer complexity
that comes with picking a place and time for your meet-up.
On the other hand, if you prefer to be alone, you are much more flexible in that aspect. While you may not be able to get to your goal by the same means a group of people would, that does not make it impossible for you to achieve excellence in solitude. Because you have so much freedom in choosing your place and time of study, make it a journey. Be
creative.
And last but certainly not least, ask yourself if you can go to a certain space.
It is important to also take your health, safety, and finances into consideration when
choosing your study space. If it is outside of your budget, if it may cause you harm,
or if it puts you in a dangerous situation use an alternative like we spoke of before.
While reaching your goal be it academic, personal, or professional is important, you
are more important so consider yourself first.
Your study space should be your safe space. It should be comfortable for you to
achieve your goals and aspirations. Find your space, and find your goal!
That's all folks,
Nadiia
