Have you ever came across the phrase "Delulu is the Solulu?" Yea, it’s pretty cliché. But let’s show you how we can ACTUALLY put it to work.
Well if you have, it suggests that our delusions hold the key to solving our problems. But when it comes to studying, do these fantasies truly offer solutions?
Putting an end to daydreaming can be challenging, especially while studying. Our delusions can pull us away from our studying goals, leading to procrastination. But, let’s get this straight, we’ve all been there, right? It’s a very common dilemma every student faces, but don’t fear it as it’s totally normal!
Here, I’ve listed a few strategies to increase the duration of engagement in your studies and eliminate daydreaming:
Fight your Distractions by Writing Them Down 📒
When the realization of your daydreaming finally hits, you feel nothing but guilt of how much time you’ve wasted. But it’s NEVER too late! So stop feeling sorry for yourself and just START.
Take immediate action to terminate it. Grab a small notepad or sticky note and jot down a brief note about your daydream - what’s exactly bothering your focus. Over time, you can keep track of what distracts you the most, and simply work on mitigating it. Maybe you find yourself dreaming about upcoming plans, moments in your life that excite or worry you, or just random thoughts. By keeping track of these distractions, you gain insight into your most common triggers.
A clear space = A clear mind! 📑
Ideally, your study space should be free from clutter and distractions. When you step into this space, allow it to be reserved only for your focus, avoiding anything irrelevant to your studies. Keep the surroundings minimalistic, with only essentials in reach. A tidy desk and a comfortable chair works wonders! Aesthetics don’t ‘always’ work, keep that in mind!
By throwing away distractions within your surroundings, you create a conducive atmosphere where your mind’s able to fully engage within a prioritized task, maximizing your study efficiency. Additionally, take advantage of tools such as noise-canceling headphones or study music to further engage with your studies. It’s that simple!
Overcoming Procrastination:
Keeping a minimalistic study area is beneficial, but have you ever found yourself just staring at a blank wall? Utilize the power of visual reminders! Here are two ways you can bring your focus back during study sessions.
Take a sticky note and draw a bold 'X' on it as a symbol of redirection. Place these sticky notes strategically around your study area, such as on the wall, or anywhere within your line of sight. Each 'X' serves as a gentle reminder, as they remind you to refocus whenever your mind begins to wander.
Make diagrams, mind maps, formulae, keywords, etc. relevant to your study content on sticky notes, and display them on your bedroom wall. This visual reminder serves as a quick reference guide, enabling easy recall of important information while minimizing distraction, and acts as a reminder to get back to studying ASAP!!
How to focus for a longer period of time:
Focusing on a specific subject or topic can indeed become tedious, leading to a loss of interest and motivation. However, always remember that Discipline > Motivation. This lack of interest can be particularly challenging when studying complex or dense subjects that require more concentration, such as Biology, Geography, etc.
Here are two study methods that I follow, which have aided me a lot.
The 3-Minute Rule: Set a timer for just 3 minutes and commit to focusing during that interval. Once the timer ends, reset it and repeat this cycle of intense concentration. The idea behind this rule is that getting started is often the most difficult part of any task, and once you've overcome that initial hurdle, you're more likely to continue working on it.
Stopwatch study method: Utilize a Stopwatch for Enhanced Focus and Productivity. Start by setting up a stopwatch and commit to focusing on your studies. As soon as you notice your focus wavering, stop the stopwatch. This marks the end of your focused study session, and you can now use this time as a benchmark for future sessions. Break your study sessions into chunks based on your focus time - for example, if you focused for 15 minutes, allocate the next study segment to be of the same duration. After each study segment, reward yourself with a short 5-minute break. Repeat this cycle, gradually increasing the duration of your study sessions each day. By using this method, you'll study better and get better at staying focused for a longer period.
As you include these methods into your routine and gradually extend your focus duration, you don't just improve how you study, but you also learn how to focus for longer periods without getting distracted. Let's all come together and embark on this journey together and unlock the full potential of your learning!
Good luck to all our hardworking GCSE students!
Until next time,
